Your Google Business Profile Is Working Against You (Here is Why)
July 10, 2026
Most plumbers and HVAC techs set up their Google Business Profile once and forget it. That makes sense. You have jobs to run, calls to return, and a truck that needs an oil change.
But here is the problem: Google is not maintaining it for you. And a neglected profile is actively costing you calls.
What Google Fills In When You Don't
If your GBP is incomplete, Google starts filling in the blanks from other sources: old directories, review sites, even guesses based on similar businesses. That means your hours might show "Open" at 10pm when you are off the clock. Your service area might list counties you stopped covering three years ago. Your phone number might be a fax line from when the previous owner had the building.
Every one of those wrong details is a customer who called the wrong number, showed up at the wrong time, or just decided to call someone else.
The Reviews Pile Up Whether You Respond or Not
Google tracks response rate. A profile that never responds to reviews gets deprioritized in local search compared to a competitor who takes two minutes to thank a customer. Your 4.6-star average does less work than it should if Google sees you as an absent owner.
And negative reviews left unanswered? Those drive decisions. A potential customer sees a one-star review about a missed appointment and no response from you. That silence reads as confirmation.
What an Active Profile Actually Does
A Google Business Profile that gets regular attention does a few things consistently:
- It shows accurate hours so people call when you can answer
- It surfaces your most recent work (photos, updates) so you look like a going concern, not a dormant listing
- It keeps your service area tight so Google sends you the right calls, not the ones three counties over
- It shows Google you are engaged, which matters for local ranking
None of this requires a marketing degree or a social media budget. It requires someone checking the profile on a regular basis and making small corrections.
The Fix Is Not Complicated
The businesses that show up first in your area are not necessarily better at plumbing or HVAC. They are just better at keeping their digital front door accurate. That is a gap you can close in an afternoon.
Start with your hours, your phone number, and your service area. Verify each one is correct today. Then respond to your last three reviews. That alone puts you ahead of most of your competition.
The rest can be handled systematically so you never have to think about it again.
